About the Role

We are seeking a confident, driven, and highly skilled professional to take on a senior leadership role within the Biochemistry Department covering General Biochemistry, Endocrinology and Toxicology. This position plays a key role in maintaining the highest standards of clinical testing while also driving improvements in efficiency, accuracy, and innovation. Reporting to the Department Manager and working closely with Clinical Pathologists, you will help lead a team of experienced scientists and technical staff. Your ability to influence change, mentor staff, and optimise workflows will be crucial to your success.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee and lead operations in toxicology and broader biochemistry testing areas, ensuring excellence in scientific practice and clinical accuracy.
  • Collaborate closely with department leadership and senior pathologists to maintain high diagnostic standards.
  • Lead staffing efforts including recruitment, rostering, performance management, training, and ongoing professional development.
  • Support the implementation and validation of new testing platforms and methodologies.
  • Monitor departmental KPIs and actively drive continuous improvement in workflow and quality.
  • Maintain compliance with relevant regulatory, accreditation, and safety standards, including NATA/RCPA.
  • Liaise with clinical clients and other stakeholders to provide expert scientific advice when required.
About You
You are a solutions-focused senior scientist with a strong foundation in leadership, clinical biochemistry and a expertise in toxicology. You thrive in a fast-paced environment and bring both technical excellence and leadership capability to your role. You are respected for your professionalism, attention to detail, and ability to lead, motivate, and guide a scientific team.

Essential Criteria:
  • A tertiary degree in Medical Science, Clinical Biochemistry, or a related field (postgraduate qualifications highly regarded).
  • A minimum of 10 years’ practical experience in clinical biochemistry, with a proven track in a leadership role.
  • Experience working across a range of analytical platforms and methods (automated, semi-automated, and manual).
  • Demonstrated experience managing or supervising laboratory teams, including mentoring and staff development.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of relevant regulatory frameworks (e.g., NATA/RCPA standards) and quality systems.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to work under pressure and manage competing priorities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a customer-focused mindset.
