Jobs, Tips

A new year means an opportunity to set new goals for yourself! Some new year’s resolutions can be stereotypical (leading to the January crowds at your gym), so consider setting some career-related resolutions for yourself this year. Here are some things you can do in 2018 to set yourself up for career success down the road.

Develop your Personal Brand

The thought of promoting yourself can feel awkward, which is why interviews can be so tough, but it’s a great way to establish yourself as a leader and can be especially helpful the next time you’re looking for a job. Getting started is easy – you can share your thoughts and opinions via social media, get involved with industry bodies and networking events within your field, or even take the plunge and speak at a workshop or panel event!  ASK to be included, take that awkward step and reach out, nothing amazing will ever happen whilst you are tucked up within your comfort zone.

Keep your skills up to date

There are numerous things that you can do to keep your skills up to date, including online courses and certifications. If you’ve been in your job for a while, you may have started to get comfortable with your current responsibilities. To help further your growth, take the time and effort to learn new skills, set higher goals that will challenge you, and take on more responsibilities.  ASK to shadow in a different department, ASK for training on a new product within your business, ASK to mentor or coach new staff members.  Take your personal development in to your own hands, be accountable for your personal growth this year.

Think about your next step now

This doesn’t necessarily mean actively looking for a new job, especially if you’re in a role that you still have room for growth in and with a company where you fit in. It’s always a good idea to think about what your next steps could be, because that can help you build a plan. Do a search online for your desired job title and check out the skills and requirements. Are you missing any of the things that are listed? Take the time now to develop these skills!

Get out to more networking events

All of us here at KE Select are big advocates of networking and getting involved in your community. Networking is helpful at every step of your career, not only when you’re looking for a job, and can be done online or offline (like at Meetup events). This is also a great way to get further engaged with topics that you’re interested in and are often learning opportunities.  Create a networking diary, plan your monthly attendance, again, take that awkward step and talk to a stranger, you just never know where any conversation will take you.

We’re getting ready for a big year in 2019 and with these suggestions, we hope you are too!
