Laboratory Manager - Pathology

Our client is one of Australia's leading providers of private medical laboratory and pathology services that operate around 100 medical laboratories and 2,000 patient collection centres across metropolitan, regional and remote Australia. 

About the role
Are you looking for a sea change and for the next step in your Medical Scientist career? This opportunity will give an experienced Senior Medical Scientist the opportunity to step into a management position of a small Multidisciplinary Laboratory in Taree, regional NSW.  The laboratory is NATA accredited for Biochemistry, Haematology, stat Micro and Blood Banking. This role is based at a local hospital and serves two hospitals within the region. 

The hours of laboratory operations are 7.30am to 8pm, Monday to Friday. Saturday 8.30am to 1.30pm and Sundays 10.30am to 1.30pm.  All other times there is an on call roster.  No more overnight shifts!

Your will be responsible for managing a team of 4 Scientific and Technical officers to perform a range of laboratory tests within a multi-disciplinary setting:
  • Prioritise work- flow to meet client’s requirements
  • Hands on role where bench work and assisting the workflow will be needed
  • Ensure results are released with acceptable turn around times (TAT)
  • Liaise with senior staff and Pathologists regarding unusual and abnormal results
  • Assist clients with test selection and result interpretation in conjunction with the central laboratory staff
  • Ensure all laboratory equipment is maintained in optimal condition and working order, all scheduled routine maintenance is performed and any unscheduled maintenance is performed as required
  • Evaluate and introduce new methods, reagent test kits and instrumentation when necessary, in conjunction with the appropriate central laboratory Department Head
  • Quality compliance management / NATA audit
  • Work and Health and Safety assessment.
  • Management of the annual operating plan and financial budgets for the branch.
About you
To be considered for this role your skills and attributes should include:
  • Tertiary Degree in Medical Laboratory Science or overseas equivalent.
  • Must be an AIMS accreditation Medical Scientist 
  • At least 5 years Medical Laboratory Scientist experience in a multi-disciplinary environment.  Experience in Blood banking is essential. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build meaningful partnerships
  • Ability to influence to negotiate outcomes
  • Experience in working under tight deadlines to meet day to day targets, with the capacity to manage multiple tasks within set timeline
  • Results orientated and a proactive and effective problem solver
  • Proven skills in defining, prioritising and organising competing tasks to meet deadlines
  • Ability to demonstrate the highest levels of confidentiality and integrity at all times
Experienced Medical Scientists with previous laboratory supervisory experience that are on regional permanent residency visas and those on temporary residency visa, 485 are eligible to apply.  In this instance you must be AIMS accredited to work as a 'scientific officer' in Australia.
